I recently attended a few Zumba classes, including new to the YMCA Aqua Zumba. Zumba is a dance fitness program created by Colombian dancer and choreographer Alberto "Beto" Perez during the 1990s. And, it is stronger and more popular than ever. It is a different class than the typical class where the instructor usually has a microphone to speak cues and encourage participants. In Zumba, there are no loud vocal cues, instead, the instructor uses hand gestures and simply demonstrates the moves. The reason for this is since it’s a culturally united class, anyone can go anywhere in the world and do a class. The moves incorporates hip-hop, cumbia, soca, samba, salsa, merengue and mambo. The choreography begins with simple dance steps/moves and then more moves are layered on until the song is complete. It can be quite a challenging workout for those who have a natural rhythm or even for someone like me (with no rhythm) a great workout just trying to keep up! I encourage you to try Zumba and burn up to 500-1000 calories a class!
