I have a title at work. It was given to me when I was hired and it designates a particular program for which I am responsible. I am a husband, a son, an uncle, a cousin, a grandchild, a brother, a friend, a co-worker, and the list could go on and on. Each day we all carry with us various titles of who we are to ourselves and to other people. How we are viewed by others, many times, depends on what we are to them. Have you ever thought of the many titles you carry? In what ways are you viewed by those in your circles of relationships? Living up to these many titles can be difficult, but it’s how we live. We can’t escape it.
Recently I read one of the many titles that God gives me in His Word. I John 3:1 says, “How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called the children of God! And that is what we are!” Did you catch that? We are called “children of God.” That means we are part of His great family.
In my earthly family, it doesn’t matter what I do, I cannot change the fact that I belong to them. It’s in the blood. That’s the picture we are given here regarding our relationship with God. We are His and there is nothing that can change that. We won’t be sold. Will not be given away. Can’t be forgotten. “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you,” the writer of Hebrews reminds us. We are part of God’s family, eternally. Once we belong to God, He is faithful to us as His children. And He will fulfill all His promises in our lives. Does that mean we can live however we desire? Surely not, because in light of God’s gift of His Son, Jesus, we are motivated to a life of obedience. Called to holy living. Commanded to follow in the footsteps of Jesus.
Do you belong? Have you given your life to Him so you could have the title of ‘His child’? If so, rejoice! You are His! If not, you are welcome to join the family. My Father never turns anyone away. I don’t know about you, but I like that kind of love that the apostle John is speaking of. That’s a deeper love than I will ever understand, and it truly is ‘great’. It is a wonderful thing to be a part of such a great family.
No matter what family name you have been given or what title you carry, bearing God’s family name is an honor, and one that I will gladly pass on to the next generation. Let’s wear His name proudly.
