Y STORY - Finding a New Home

When a job opportunity relocated the Bautista family from Querétaro México to Oconomowoc in September 2017, they knew it would be an adventure, but this exciting opportunity did not come without challenges. Paco and Andrea wanted to make sure they had a place to go with their children Franco, 3, and Emma, almost 2, to share family activities together, meet new people and be involved in their new community. The Y became that place.
It was especially important for Franco to learn English so he would be ready to start 3K, which was only a short year away. Before moving he had learned some basic English, but was limited to shapes, numbers and colors. They also wanted to make sure he was in an environment that provided the daily structure and routine he was accustomed to from his life in México. The Y’s Sunshine School was a great fit for Franco. Staffed with several Spanish speaking teachers, Franco made significant growth in only a few short months. Franco’s Mom Andrea expressed, “I am so happy about his progress and am surprised how fast he is learning. It is beyond my expectations. He has made friendships, he feels comfortable, has gained confidence and is learning respect for other adults.”
Sunshine school teacher Kerry Hansen shared, “Franco is a teacher’s gift. Watching him master a second language is a reminder that children are truly remarkable ‒ and full of super powers. In fact, today Franco walked (flew) into class and cheered, ‘I’m a superhero!’ I couldn’t agree more.”
