Exodus 3:3-4 “So Moses thought, I will go over and see this strange sight – why the bush doesn’t burn up. When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, ‘Moses! Moses!’.”
Maybe you’re familiar with this story – of how God appeared to Moses to call him to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt. Maybe not. If you’re not, I encourage you to read Exodus chapters 1-2 to get a little background. I think what sticks out to most people in this story is the burning bush, that God used this supernatural event to get Moses’ attention. It got me thinking, God could have announced his plan to have Moses lead the people of Israel out of Egypt any way He wanted to. In fact He could have compelled Moses – used Him as His pawn to accomplish His will. He didn’t need to get Moses’ attention – He didn’t have to announce His plans. He could have simply overtaken his thoughts and actions and had Moses work for Him, almost robotically. Instead, God lovingly calls Moses by using a supernatural element, by creating an event that was almost impossible to ignore. He invited Moses to be a part of something bigger than himself and his life in Midian. Verse 3 from the verses above tells us that Moses thought something strange was going on. He made the decision to go over and check it out. Verse 4 is what really caught my attention as I was reading this section of scripture, and I think has applications to so many things.
“When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush”
I don’t think God would have called Moses from the burning bush if Moses wouldn’t have recognized something strange was going on and went to check it out. I really like that in verse four it says “when the LORD saw that he had gone over to look……” Notice how God didn’t shout ‘Moses! Moses!’ until Moses was aware of the bush. I wonder how long the bush was burning before Moses noticed it.
I once heard someone say God will do anything for us except force us.
What is the LORD seeing you respond to or ignore? As this applies to your health and fitness, what “burning bushes” are present in your life? What is God waiting for you to recognize and check into? What is He using to get your attention?
We have all been blessed with a body. Your body is an amazing creation of the Most High. He has created it to serve you and enable you to accomplish your goals and desires. Maybe lately you have felt it hasn’t been working for you, but against you. Maybe lately you’ve been feeling certain pains, limitations, twinges. Maybe you’re unable to perform at a level you used to. Maybe you’re at the top of your game but the rush of success you expected is severely lacking. Maybe you’re incapable of feeling accomplished and well-served by your body. Satisfaction is always only at the end of the next race or the end of the next season.
Might I suggest that all of the aforementioned circumstances might be your “burning bush”. Maybe God is waiting for you to notice and when He sees you investigate, He’ll call you from within.
God will not force you into health and fitness. Nor will He force you into loving Him and serving Him with your body, but He will work to teach you and help you make decisions that are in your best interest. He will provide people, places, jobs, opportunities and relationships that will help you accomplish what He has planned for you. Are you paying attention? Or are you so focused on yourself and your own ambitious goals that you can’t see the burning bush?
What if Moses would NOT have thought to himself, “I will over over and see this strange sight”? What if he wouldn’t have investigated the odd signs around him? If you know anything about Bible history, you know he was instrumental in the Israelites delivery from slavery in Egypt. His obedience to the world around him and to be aware of his surroundings helped set his course. God certainly did not NEED Moses to fulfill His will, but how extraordinary is it that He allowed Moses to be a part of this incredible event in history?
God certainly doesn’t need you or me to fulfill His will either, yet when we pay attention to any signs He’s giving us, His invitations to participate in His divine plan, how much does that deepen our relationship with Him?
In my opinion, health and fitness is not simply the absence of sickness. Instead, being healthy and fit by being obedient to the signs and symptoms God has demonstrated in my life is REAL, lasting health. Being open to the people, events and circumstance He’s placing in
my path contribute to my overall health. Not ignoring the advice of doctors or family members or friends. Not avoiding places and activities that will help improve my health.
What’s your burning bush? What is God using in your life to get your attention? My prayer is you check into it. You will never know what God will reveal to you or what He has in store for you, if you fail to recognize His presence.
