National Volunteer Week

This week is National Volunteer Week. This is an opportunity to celebrate the impact of volunteer service and the power of volunteers to tackle society’s greatest challenges, to build stronger communities and be a force that transforms the world.

In honor of this week, we would like to share with you our Volunteer Coach Spotlight for the month of April:

Bradley Groff makes a difference at the Y! He is currently a volunteer coach for our youth volleyball 1st-2nd and 3rd-4th grade teams! Check out his profile to learn about his volunteer work at the Y:

How did you first get involved with coaching at the Y:

I am coaching two of my girls, but my oldest daughter Emma, who started playing volleyball at the YMCA and now club for the past 3 years, is my assistant coach. Beyond the practicality of it fitting our families schedule, it offers a much greater opportunity to be more involved with my children, even if only a few additional hours each week.

Why do you enjoy coaching?
With volleyball, especially at the young ages, the most outgoing and energetic child can become timid and shy when standing on the court during a game. My number one goal is for them to be comfortable moving around the court and using their voices. Seeing the progress made in court awareness and communication from week 1 to week 2 is what I have enjoyed the most because it will translate well into their daily lives as they grow up.

What is your favorite memory from coaching at the Y:
Seeing one of the children do something for the first time, such as getting a serve over and scoring a point. At other times it is passing the ball back over the net, stringing two hits together, or even three hits. As the weeks progress, I can only assume I will continue to be proud of my teams more and more.

When not at the Y, what do you like to do for fun?
I enjoy running/working out, cooking/baking, family time/activities, and attending/viewing Brewers, Badgers, Bucks, and Bayern Munich games.
