So here we stand. A new year. A fresh start. The past year has faded ever so quietly into the hope that accompanies the start of the new. It is almost as if we have been handed a clean slate. Dreams abound. Resolutions are made. Goals are set. Where will this new year take us? Where will it take you? What is on your horizon and what have you been dreaming for in this coming year? As we all are aware, our future is unseen. Sure, we can hope, dream and set goals, but only God knows what this year will hold. Our future and our aspirations are held in the palm of His hand.
I am reminded of one of life’s principles that Solomon gives us in the book of Proverbs. In his encouragement, he reminds us how important it is that we trust in the One who knows our future. He says:
“In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.”
Dreams and goals are important for us, as many times they will help direct us and keep us moving in this life. But without a deep, abiding trust in Christ, the One who determines our steps each day, our goals and dreams are futile. Without that level of trust, we may find that even our best intentions can prove to be empty strivings, or could even lead us in a wrong direction. But as we trust Him with our hopes for the new year, and we find that even when our journey doesn’t match our hopes, as it sometimes will, we can rest assured that His plan was always better than anything we might have imagined at the start.
So who do you trust to determine your steps this year? Do you trust in your own self, with no foresight, or do you trust in the God who knows your future? Christian author, Max Lucado, speaks of our decisions and goals by writing, “God gave you a mind. Use it to know Him better….God gave you a will. Use it to obey Him. Make decisions that honor Him and please Him.”
So this year, as you chase your dreams, do so with a deep, abiding trust in Christ. Set goals that would be honoring to Him and wherever your journey leads you, follow it with a complete obedience in the God who is determining your steps. Keep trusting, keep following. Happy New Year!
